DIY Lipstick

While I was away from blogging for a month I intentionally did a few more activities with my kids and this DIY lipstick project was just one of those that my husband and I did with Nevaeh (who is 6 now) while the babies were asleep for the night. My husband and some facebook friends introduced me to this video here on just how to do it. Below is a list of the ingredients:
DSC02135
A box of Crayola (or any brand) of crayons and as many as you need or want from a pack of 12 to 100+
Coconut oil
Plastic condiment serving cups with lids
Measuring Spoons, especially a 1/2 tsp.
Saucepan/skillet
Measuring cup of about 1 in a half cups of water.
Serving toothpicks or craft sticks
Q-tips or lip brush for applying lipstick at the end

First of all pick out the crayons colors that will be used to make lipstick with and peel off the paper from the crayons (this was the most tedius part).

DSC02137
In the video in the link provided above the presenter suggests writing down the colors used (especially when using many different shades of crayons) I didn’t do this step though.

DSC02136
Fill a saucepan or skillet with about 1 in a half cups of water and then put the skillet on a burner and turn the burner dial to LOW.
Put the same number of plastic serving cups in the water as designated for each color used.
Next take 1/2 a tsp of coconut oil and put it in each individual little plastic cup and let the coconut oil melt
DSC02138
Next break up the crayons and add a 3/4 of a crayon color to each little container and let these melt into the melted coconut oil, stir with serving sticks or toothpicks. ***We made the mistake of adding the whole crayon to each which changed the results big time in the end, but more on that in a moment. ***

DSC02139

As the crayon completely melts stir and remove the plastic containers from the water and let these cool. Then take a q-tip or lip brush and have fun applying.

DSC02147

Nevaeh tried a pink crayon color

DSC02159

I choose a red color that I wore with this outfit post here.

Our results or findings from this project:

-This project takes under an hour to do

-You might spend anywhere from $5-$10 for supplies depending on cost and where you buy items or based on what you already have on hand.

-we placed the whole crayon into the coconut oil when really all was needed was 3/4 of a crayon.
-The lipstick made my lips itch after wearing it for an extended period of time so perhaps lip balm or moisturizer applied before hand would have helped.
– The use of too much crayon cause the lipstick pigment to harden to the point of being harder to get out with the q-tip (theory: possibly because of the adding of the whole crayon rather than 3/4 of it).

Overall it was a fun activity and Nevaeh still applies it daily, to wear to her friends, church etc. I loved getting to spend this time with her.

If you do this activity let me know how it turns out.
Have you ever made DIY lipstick or make-up?

DIY Busy Bags (for busy toddlers & preschoolers) part 2 and Busy Bag Swap

busybagswapcollage3

Months ago I posted a post titled “DIY Busy Bags (for busy toddlers and preschoolers),” (read post here) (pin here). Well today I am going to introduce you to a few more DIY busy bag ideas to help your toddler or preschooler with fun filled DIY learning games and activities. I will also fill you in on what each task helps your child in developmentally (motor, cognitive, etc.,)

Before I begin filling you in on the different activities I must let you know that all that you see here was not my original idea, but instead that of other pinners on Pinterest. These crafts were handmade by me at our local library “DIY busy bag” event months ago. I will include a pin of each activity as I go along.

The first DIY activity I would like to introduce you too is the “Go fishing” activity. (You can view the pin here to read up on this activity). This craft unlike the pin is made up of paper fish rather then felt fish. Basically, all you do is take two fish template cutouts, sandwich paper clips in between them, glue and then attach a magnetic washer or magnet onto a stringed straw or wooden stick to use to fish the fish up. You can view my results below as well as view my two year old son playing the game.

1558592_10101067380018993_6208334346329169232_n 10311765_10101067380023983_198812527501492717_n

This activity is great for eye hand coordination, patience, and counting fish. You could introduce different colored fish, maybe fish of different sizes. This is the perfect activity for toddlers and a great way to introduce subtracting or take away to your preschooler.

The second DIY busy bag activity I would like to introduce is the foam shaped lacing activity. All you do is make a template of a fish, house or other object and then trace this template onto foam and cut out the foam. I choose to do a butterfly. Next hole punch the shape all around, find some yarn and you can begin learning to lace (or your child that is).

1377205_10101067380014003_8116357073600390427_n

I modified this activity by adding tape to the end of the yarn to help with pulling the string in and out of the holes easier. You can find the pin to this activity here. I find this activity great for eye-hand coordination, patience and fine motor.

My third and last busy bag craft is felt chain links.  This activity only requires different colored cut out strips of felt with opposite Velcro pieces on the font and back of each strip at the tip. My 5 year old enjoys this activity, my 2 year old son tries this activity but gets bored with it quick.

10687101_10101067380143743_4050765533386318954_n 10646961_10101067380009013_7180182243516798364_n

This activity is good for patterns, color recognition, counting strips linked and finally fine motor. You can find this pin here.

I hope you learned or were inspired by some new activities here or maybe got some ideas on what you want to work on with your toddler or preschooler. I have a few more “DIY Busy Bags” to blog about in the near future so I hope you can join in on that with me. Once again you can find these pins in the “Busy Bags” board of my Pinterest account here.

busybagswapcollage3

Now let’s see what kind of “busy bags” you can create! Today, I am excited to be partnering up with Keri of Living In This Season for a fun “Busy Bag Swap” opportunity. What this means is that Keri and I will have a sign up for anyone interested to participate in making two different busy bags to send to another blogger, a “swap”. What we would like to encourage you to do is make 2 of the busy bags for yourself and duplicate these to send to your matched up blogger, that way you have two that you made and then can share 2 more.  Once the teamed up bloggers have their 2 busy bags then there will be a designated day to show off what  busy bags were received in a post. If you are interested in signing up for this swap then e-mail Keri your name, blog URL, names and ages of your children so that matches can be made before the announced match up date of Monday, March 2 (or next Monday). Her e-mail address is kerisnyder@gmail.com. The announcement of matched up bloggers will be made on the blog next Monday (March 2) and by e-mail. The Busy Bags must be mailed by Friday, March 13th and on Monday, March 30th Keri and I will host a link up so you can link up your busy bag swap posts. Age range for busy bags must be between the 1-5 years of age. Need more ideas on busy bags then there is always pinterest.com (just type Busy Bags for toddlers, preschoolers or Kindergarteners) or visit my previous Busy Bag post for ideas here, or my Busy Bags pinterest board here.

Thank you for dropping by today and considering a Busy Bag swap opportunity that will be fun for your kids, nieces, nephews, grand kids, neighbors kids, etc.,

Rachel

Borrowing from my sister

DSC02109I may have mentioned in the past that I love to borrow my sister Annalises’ clothes (well I actually mean accessories). Here is one of those times. The scarf, cardigan and boots are hers, but she allowed me to borrow them for a day of shopping with her. DSC02108
DSC02114
DSC02118Actually the scarf was given back per her request, boots are STILL in my possession and worn often and the cardigan was given to me, SCORE!  I am so grateful for my sister Annalise (well all 3 of my sisters, see post here on all 3 of them) but it is just fun to share my passion for fashion with my lovely sister(s).

Outfit details: Scarf: Charlotte Russe (borrowed)//Cardigan: unknown//White tee: JC Penny//Leggings: Old Navy//Ankle Boots: Simply Vera Vera Wang//Bracletts: Charlotte Russe//Nail Polish: ULTA.

DSC02117
Oh and before I go for the day I want to show off my best that could be done with curly hair fishtail braid that Annalise happened to do. My first one and so lovely, even with the flyaways.

What or who do you borrow items from?
Thanks for reading ladies,
Rachel xo

Bloggers Who Have Inspired Me link up, Birthday girl and $300 giftcard giveaway

Good morning! It has snowed non-stop since yesterday morning and we could be getting 12 inches of snow or more, which means that this is what winter feels like and should be. However, the temperature has been in the 15 degrees and under which makes it a little unbearable. Other than the kids going stir crazy I have enjoyed getting cozied up on the couch with a blanket and watching some good movies or Instagramming on my phone.

This past weekend was filled with celebrating Nevaeh’s 6 birthday party. First of all, the actual day of her birthday I made cheesy scrambled eggs and toaster heated some Belgium waffles for dinner (per Nevaehs request) and then whipped up a cake and had a little celebration in our own home. Then on the day of her party we went to McDonalds and had family members and friends from her class over for a party. I am pretty sick of McDonald parties but where else do you have a party in the winter time for a child without spending a ton of money? Sure I could get on Pinterest and come up with themes and do a party at home but I am just not that crafty or organized. Any suggestions? What kind of parties have you done?

Now on to the link up. Todays featured bloggers are below along with a description of each. I choose to do a collage of the ladies featured as something new. I hope you will join in and link up and possibly be featured next Tuesday. Just follow the rules below and say hello to a few bloggers that have linked up.
bloggerswhohavecollage1
1). Megan of @poshprime.com linked up the first of three ways she styled this plaid dress. I loved the edgy-ness to her outfit posted here.

2). Lisa of @beauty101bylisa is a new blogger I have been following and so when she posted this outfit as well as link it up I knew I needed to feature her. The Burberry inspired scarf and styling shorts for winter look is just too cute not to notice. You can follow up on her post (and weekly link up here).
bloggerswhohavecollage2
3). I loved how versatile this scalloped lace top was on Sammi of @beautifuldreamerami. I found myself wondering on the possibilities of what she could style this lovely top with, but I loved her touch of the pink blazer and accessories. You can check out more here.

4). Tiffany of @brightonabudgetl linked up a remix of a black and white small print polka dotted dress and the above th picture is only just one of the ways she styled this lovely dress to create a blouse. You can check out her other remix of this dress in her post here.

5). Becky of @bybmg.blogspot.com is probably one of the busiest ladies I have ever known yet she is just to darn good at it all so I asked her how she did it all and weeks later she wrote up this post and linked it up, so how could I not feature it. Read here as she reviews a book on how to handle it all but more importantly how she really handles it all.

Now it is your turn, just follow the link up rules below:
1). Please link up recent posts and include the link up button or post this URL link back on your blog. Roses are red….

DSC02336

DSC02339
I hope you all enjoyed your weekend or Valentines day, I know I did. To be honest the Valentines day started off rough with stresses but towards the afternoon and throughout the evening it got much better (except our wallet, the cold, cold weather and my feet hurting in these boots as we did a lot of walking) but it was worth it.
DSC02337
My hubby and I ended up walking around a Salvage yard or building looking for inspiration for décor, taking pictures of items we liked and took these outfit photos near by. It was bitterly cold out but my hubby and I champed the wind.
DSC02340
DSC02341I am blessed to have this man in my life. We talked about the good times in our marriage. Fact: Before we had kids we used to read self-improvement books many of them being on marriage and relationship, and anything by Dave Ramsey. We used to cook great meals, eat out at restaurants several days a week, and just enjoy peace in the mornings at Starbucks. Bpsh not any more. But God is still good and we have new memories that we are making and that in itself is a joy.

Valentines Day outfit Inspiration and $300 H&M Giveaway

Happy Friday! Can you believe Valentines day will be upon us tomorrow?!? Neither can I. In lieu of the big day of love tomorrow I thought it would be neat to come up with a style board of what I would have loved to have on hand to wear for a casual date with my hubby. For this post I choose to style some of my favorites from H&M as well as fill you in on a lovely $300 H&M giveaway  (that’s right whoop whoop) going on now and for 3 weeks (details below). I can’t wait to see what the weekend holds as far as Valentines but I do know it will be fun and relaxing (as we will have my sister babysit for a few hours) and so I can’t wait to fill you in on the details early next week. Until then what plans do you have for your Valentine weekend? What would you buy or love to buy from H&M if you won?
